The truth about the Rolling Stones, by an eight-year-old boy [May. 22nd, 2010|07:29 pm]

Tragic: Jake's socialite parents Susan 'Puss' Coriat and Tommy Weber

As the eight-year-old boy walked through the vast iron gates of Villa Nellcote on the Cote d’Azur in the South of France, the scene unfolded like a child’s fantasy. There was a huge pool complete with diving board, a sprawling toy-filled sandpit and even a selection of miniature motorbikes parked alongside a mansion that housed a menagerie of dogs, cats and a rabbit. Tugging the sleeve of his six-year-old brother, young Jake Weber could barely contain his excitement as he cried: ‘It’s just like a fairytale palace!’

But the Villa Nellcote, known locally for having been a Nazi headquarters during the war, was certainly no place for children. No sooner had the heavy wooden doors to the mansion closed than one of the most famous men on the planet lurched forward. Pausing to give Jake’s golden hair a half-hearted tousle, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards knelt down and pulled the boy’s T-shirt off, revealing a package wrapped in plastic taped firmly to Jake’s bare stomach. This, the boy learned, was to be Richards’s ‘wedding gift’ to bandmate Mick Jagger. Inside the package was half a kilo of cocaine. Jake’s brother, Charley, also had half a kilo wrapped round his body. This would be for Richards’s own use.

Re-issue of Stones album spawns Cannes documentary [May. 22nd, 2010|07:28 pm]

'Stones in Exile' to screen in Directors Fortnight

The intoxicating blend of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll never spoils, particularly if it's of an early '70s vintage. And it never hurts to use film and TV to sell it, particularly if the film makes its debut at Cannes.

"Exile on Main Street," the Rolling Stones' down-and-dirty double album that was reviled upon its 1972 release -- then later hailed as a masterpiece -- appears to grow ever more complex with age. Event-scaled activity is swirling around the album's digitally remastered reissue May 18, which includes 10 freshly unearthed tracks from the period.

The Universal Music Group has spared no expense to create three lavish packages: from the original 18-track release to a "super deluxe" edition that includes vinyl, a 30-minute DVD and a 64-page collector's book. In addition, UMG has enlisted its merchandising company, Bravado, to create an extensive line of "Exile"-inspired products -- t-shirts, caps, leather jackets and the like, all outfitted with the Stones' iconic tongue-wagging logo.

The actor talks about playing his character for six years and dodging the cancellation bullet

Jake Weber, known for feature film roles in WENDIGO, U-571, the remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD and THE HAUNTING OF MOLLY HARTLEY, is now in his sixth season of playing Joe Dubois on MEDIUM. Joe, a science-minded engineer, is married to Patricia Arquette’s psychic character Allison, who uses her gifts to help the Phoenix district attorney’s office. They have three daughters, all of whom seem to have inherited some aspect of Allison’s otherworldly gifts. However, nobody foresaw that, after five years on NBC, the series would be cancelled, so that the fifth-season finale was a cliffhanger that saw Allison comatose in the hospital. Happily for all concerned, CBS picked up MEDIUM; the show is now airing first-run episodes on its new network Friday nights.

iF MAGAZINE: Would you have felt bad about where your character Joe was left off if MEDIUM had ended with last season’s cliffhanger?

JAKE WEBER:
Not so much for my character, but there are two hundred and fifty people there with families and jobs that would have had a real hard time right now – it’s a tough time to be unemployed. It would have been nice if we’d known we were going to finish – it would have been nice to have some closure to it, rather than leave it on a cliffhanger. So many great shows have just ended like that. It would have been a shame to end it without having some sort of storyline that was satisfying for an audience. And also, it would have been sad for the two hundred and thirty people who worked on the show to all of a sudden be made [unemployed].

Behind successful 'Medium' is Jake Weber, who plays feisty, loving husband (8/11/2005) [May. 22nd, 2010|07:25 pm]

Jake Weber is "not interested in inviting scrutiny." But when you're the co-star of a successful TV series, that stuff happens. While he's eating lunch in a Los Angeles cafe, two young women can't resist coming over to say how much they admire his work and enjoy "Medium."

He's amused that the interruption comes just at the moment that he's talking about the "recognition aspect" of a TV star's life, which he says is "disingenuous for actors to complain about" even though he's not someone who would ever want to see details of his personal life in print. "Medium," now in summer reruns on NBC, attracted an average 13.9 million viewers weekly in its first season. Patricia Arquette, who plays a crime-solving psychic who communicates with the dead, was nominated for an acting Emmy this month.
